Page 1 of 2 On Tuesday, 18 September, Jacobs University students in each of the three Colleges made their decisions. After having heard from a number of candidates aiming to serve as Parliamentarians, on-campus undergraduates elected their Undergraduate Student Government for 2007-2008.
This year’s Parliament elections saw much the same trend as those of the years before. The response from the first year students, as widely expected, was the most enthusiastic with all three Colleges having their fair share of freshmen candidates. On the other hand, the class of 2008 was not at all eager to compete, with no third year student vying for a position. The second years were somewhat in the middle, with an overall number of four competing for a seat. Predictably, all of them nailed the posts. From College III, Jan Eichhorn, Ankur Modi, Andrés Navarrete and Jessica Ice filled the four available seats with Sean Ames and Mohammad Faisal missing out. Both Jan and Ankur registered comfortable wins. Thanks to his position in the Student Parliament and his work on the Academic Affairs Committee last year, nobody expected Jan to lose. Ankur was also a sure thing for the Parliament on the back of his strong performance last year for the Academic Integrity Committee. Andrés and Jessica made it through among the four first years who applied. In Mercator, the elections were more of a referendum. With only three people standing for the equivalent number of seats, the student body only had to say Yes or No for each particular candidate. This made the job of getting elected much easier for Mitul Jain, Musafiri Sebziga and Maria Suciu. All three of them were endorsed, an almost 70% voter turnout indicated the support they enjoy from Mercatorians. Mitul, a Parliamentarian last year as well, was the strongest candidate, sealing the deal easily. From Krupp, George Demian secured the largest number of votes. As he had already been in the Parliament last year, this came as no surprise. Among the other three candidates, Salomon Theinert and Devashish Tikeker got elected with Alexandra Fasola falling short. Average voter turnout across the Colleges was roughly 50%, while students in Krupp were the most eager voters, notching up a 62% turnout. During the first meeting of the Student Parliament, other offices were also decided upon. Florin Bora, a third year with two years of Parliamentary experience and time spent as Head of the Financial Affairs Committee, was elected as the President of the USG. Ammar Qureshi, organizer of O-Week for the past two years and also a former Parliamentarian, was elected as Vice President. Finally, two very enthusiastic first years, Oluwaseun Matthew Oguntade and Caroline Laroche, were elected as the Secretariat for the Student Parliament. Views: 2207
