Last Saturday the IUB Debating Society convened for its second debate day. With plenty of debaters to run two debates at a time, this was surely a great success. Topics discussed were democracy and Turkey's admission to the EU. The debaters were split into a high and low round, giving both experienced and novice debaters a fair chance to improve their rhetorical skills. Before debates started everyone was served with butter cake and Red Bull, a combination that is slowly but surely becoming one of the trademarks of the society. Democratization was the theme of the first round. Sergiu and Brighton proposed to have the Pope elected, while Axel and Algirdas were more concerned about the World Bank. The second round of the day was intended to revolve around Turkey's chances to be welcomed to the European Union, however things did not quite go as expected. Again in the opening government, Sergiu and Brighton preferred to talk about the animal instead of arguing politics. Not undeservedly, they lost this round. In the other room Henrik and Sebastian prevailed, after Bastian and Steffen won the first round. Some still could not get enough of debating and decided to meet again in the late evening to run a debate in the American parliamentary style. This was to prepare the IUB debaters for an upcoming tournament in Estonia, taking place May 6-8. On the same weekend the Debating Society will also run its third and last debate day for this semester. The upcoming Saturday will first see a General Assembly of the IUB Debating Society. A new Constitution will be voted upon and elections for President and the four Vice Presidents are going to be held. With these steps, the society is going to set its course for the next academic year, hoping to be even more successful than it already has been in the past. |
